Usage & data policy

The fine print.

Swarthmore is a small place: you trust that we're not going to be evil, and we trust you to use our services responsibly. Our staff are Swatties too; you have class with us, see us in the dining hall, and so on. We hope we never have to refer to this, but we want to spell it out clearly.

Usage policy

  • Don't try to hack us, compromise our services, or maliciously overload our systems. If you find a security vulnerability, please report it to us as soon as possible.
  • Don't use our services for anything that is, in our sole opinion, harmful, illegal, hateful, or gratuitously obscene.
  • We reserve the right to restrict access, take down content, access data, or take other action we believe is necessary to prevent harm or keep our services running smoothly.

Privacy and data

  • We store information you provide because it is needed to make our services work. For example, we store your email address so we know where to send email.
  • We log some technical information, such as your IP address and browser, to diagnose issues, block spam, and operate our services.
  • If you ask, we'll make an effort to remove data associated with you from our servers.
  • Some services, including Course Planner and Cygnet, use databases operated by Swarthmore ITS. We don't control those databases and aren't responsible for inaccuracies. We can prevent your information from appearing in Cygnet on request, but changes to the ITS directory must be requested from ITS.
  • We use a self-hosted instance of Plausible Analytics to view aggregate traffic information. The data is stored on our servers, isn't shared outside SCCS, and doesn't allow us to track individual users. Read more about Plausible's privacy approach.
  • We don't make liability or warranty guarantees. We do our best to keep services available and data intact, but systems can go down, lose data, or be compromised. Don't use SCCS services to store sensitive personal data, and don't trust us with the only copy of anything irreplaceable.
